Clinical Services Training Program

Who Should Apply

Find experience and mentorship in a trauma-informed, attachment-focused environment at the Lourie Center. We accept:

  • Second-year or advanced level social work, counseling, and expressive arts interns
  • Third- and fourth-year (pre-internship) psychology externs
  • Other mental health disciplines welcome to apply

The program gives preferences to applicants with some clinical child experience and testing. Diverse applicants, especially those with multilingual skills, are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

Please see the training brochures on the right side of this webpage for annual application deadlines. Follow your school program’s online application process, if available. Please email clinic@louriecenter.org the following:

  • Letter of intent
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Two references
  • For doctoral applicants- include writing examples, such as test reports or evaluations.

The Lourie Center abides by the Greater Washington Clinical Psychology Programs Council Externship Guidelines. Please see the annual flyers for application deadlines for Clinical Psychology externships. For other mental health disciplines, The Lourie Center will accept applications on a rolling basis from January to the end of March. Spots are competitive and early applications are encouraged.

What You’ll Learn

Focus on:

  • Applying clinical attachment theory
  • Developing relationships with young children and their families
  • Studying the psychodynamic perspective and understanding children within an intergenerational family
  • Taking part in interventions

Supervision

You’ll receive supervision based on your academic program and degree needs.

Student Seminar

Gain insight into thoughtful integration of theory and ongoing clinical practice. Take part in weekly student seminars, usually held Thursday mornings. Attendance is mandatory.

Caseload & Schedule

Your caseload will vary based on your discipline, experience and schedule. Commit to at least 16 hours per week from September through May (or as scheduled by your academic program).

Be present at the Lourie Center at least three days per week. The Lourie Center is open five days a week between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students in the Parent-Child Clinical Services Program should anticipate one evening of work until 8pm. Students in Therapeutic Nursery Program (TNP) may be expected to arrive at early to participate in team meetings before children arrive for the day. 

Parent-Child Program Requirements

If you work in the Parent-Child Clinical Services Program, you’ll commit to one late evening (until 8 p.m.) per week. Go to mandatory staff meetings and trainings midday on most Wednesdays.

About The Lourie Center

The Lourie Center is a training site focusing on social-emotional development, mental health and education in childhood. Every year, we train social work and psychology interns and externs from university programs. We also offer postdoctoral training. The center is affiliated with Adventist HealthCare.
