The Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children Honors United States Senator Benjamin Cardin

Rockville, MD – The Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children (the Lourie Center) will present the 2010 Outstanding Public Service Award to U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) during a reception at the residence of the Ecuadorian Ambassador in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 5, 2010.

The Lourie Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to understand and strengthen emotionally healthy parent-child relationships within the community through early prevention, intervention, education, research and training. The Lourie Center is the only one of its kind in Maryland to provide therapeutic behavioral and emotional services to infants and young children.

“Senator Cardin’s commitment to children and families, not only at the Lourie Center but in communities across Maryland, was evident during his visit to the Lourie Center in November 2009,” said Marcel Wright, executive director of the Lourie Center. “We are proud to present the 2010 Outstanding Public Service Award to Senator Cardin in recognition of his staunch advocacy for health-care and education initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children and their families.”

Last year, Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.) received the Outstanding Public Service Award for his work on mental health reform and early education.

"Ensuring that all children have an opportunity to receive a quality education and quality health care is of personal concern to me and one of the highest priorities for the people of Maryland who I am proud to represent," said Sen. Cardin. “The Lourie Center is a jewel in the community dedicated to providing education and early intervention for our youngest and most vulnerable citizens now and for years to come. I am honored to be recognized by the Lourie Center – an organization that shares my passion and commitment to children.”

The reception will be held at the residence of His Excellency Luis Gallegos, the Ambassador of Ecuador, and his wife Mrs. Fabiola Gallegos. “Mrs. Gallegos and I were both moved to learn about the wonderful programs and services that the Lourie Center offers to children and families in the community,” said Luis Gallegos. “We are very pleased to host the upcoming reception, which will raise money to help advance the Lourie Center’s mission in the community.”

In 2006, the Lourie Center affiliated with Adventist HealthCare. Based in Rockville, Maryland, the Reginald S. Lourie Center specializes in the assessment, treatment and prevention of emotional, behavioral and developmental problems in infants and young children.
